You Matter Too

Hey there, parents! As a lactation consultant, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate the joys and struggles of parenthood. That's why I want to remind you that choosing your mental health and well-being is just as important as deciding how to feed your baby. Breastmilk is incredible, but happy and healthy parents are crucial to taking care of your baby in a way that is most supportive of their development.

If you're feeling the pressure to breastfeed, remember that formula-fed babies can be just as healthy and happy as breastfed babies. It's essential to prioritize your mental health, and if breastfeeding is causing you stress or anxiety to the point that it is robbing you of the joy of parenting, then it might not be the right fit for you and your baby. That's okay! There are plenty of other ways to bond with your little one and nourish their bodies.

If you're still expecting and interested in breastfeeding, taking a prenatal breastfeeding class is an excellent way to learn about what to expect, when to ask for help, and techniques and tools that will empower you and build confidence. You can check out my own class on my services page, or look for classes in your local area if you prefer in-person learning. And if you need additional support when baby arrives, don't hesitate to reach out to a lactation consultant. We're here to help and support you throughout your journey, whether you need virtual or in-home support.

Speaking of support, virtual consultations are becoming more and more common, and they're a great way to get the help you need from the comfort of your own home at a lower cost than in-person support. Plus, scheduling is often faster and easier so you can get amazing support very quickly. If you prefer in-home support, your lactation consultant will work with you in the comfort of your own home, where you can relax and focus on your breastfeeding journey.

I recently had a client who struggled with breastfeeding and felt guilty about even considering formula. We worked together to explore her options and ultimately she decided that weaning from breastfeeding and providing formula was the best choice for her family. Instead of feeling like she had failed, she was empowered by the decision to prioritize her mental health and create a feeding plan that worked for her and her baby. And you know what? Her baby was healthy, happy, and thriving.

Remember, the most important thing is that you feel confident and supported in your choices. So go ahead and do what works best for you and your family. And if you need a little extra motivation, just remember that you're doing an excellent job. In fact, you're doing better than you think! 😊
